When people hear about a therapy dog, they often imagine a friendly pup who loves people. But the reality is a bit different. For therapy pair work, it's not enough for the dog to be cute, calm, or well-trained. At the same time, the handler and their dog must form a good team that makes up the therapy pair.

At Zavod PET, we've been working in the field of dog-assisted interventions for years. We continually see the powerful impact a dog can have on a person. Their presence can calm, relax, motivate, and open space for connection. Sometimes, it's the dog that helps make the first step where words aren't enough.
But that's exactly why the dog must truly be suitable for such work. A therapy dog needs to be stable, well-socialized, manageable, and relaxed enough even in unfamiliar environments. In facilities, they encounter various people, unusual sounds, medical equipment, and situations that aren't everyday for them. Equally important is the handler, who must know their dog well, understand its signals, and respect its boundaries. The therapy pair is always the dog and human together.
The path to the therapy pair title isn't quick. It starts with testing, and the dog must be at least 12 months old. This is followed by general training, an internship with at least 25 hours of practice in various facilities, and a theoretical and practical exam. Only then can the dog and handler earn the therapy pair title.
In our work, we also follow the Slovenian original standard for Therapy Dogs – SIST 1192, which we helped develop together with Tačke pomagačke, SLO-CANIS, and the Association of Paraplegics of Slovenia. We believe this field must be developed professionally and responsibly, for the benefit of both people and dogs. Throughout, the dog's welfare always comes first. The dog must be healthy, well-groomed, regularly vet-checked, and physically and mentally capable of the work. If it shows signs of stress or overload, it's the handler's job to adjust or stop the work.
If you recognize yourself in this description and think you and your dog could be a suitable therapy pair, feel free to contact us or learn more about our work, inclusion conditions, and the path to the therapy pair title on our website www.zavod-pet.si.
